What the Heck is That?!

On a recent appointment, I came across a peculiar item hanging on the wall.  I have never seen anything like this before, so naturally I asked the homeowner about it.  I was quite surprised when she told me what it was.

Can you guess what this item hanging on the wall is?

Let me know what you think it is, and I will reveal the answer on a later date.

hmmmm ... very interesting!  Seems like something from a century or so ago.  Was it something that was from the Titanic?  Taking a stab in the dark on that one  :)

Kristina ~ My first thought was a wall sconce, but maybe an old time fire extinguisher?  Interesting though, I'm curious now.

Um   no clue, if it's not a light, then I am stumped.

to me it looks like and early fire extinguisher..

The sad thing is that so many of us Realtors leaped to that thought ..  guess it to many hours of watching Antique Road Show .  We do need a life sometimes

I'm going for a homemade aromatherapy lamp.

To me it looks like an upside down Genie bottle, although at first glance I would think it could be a light.

Kristina, it looks like a light but it is awful high up near the ceiling. Very decorative too. Please enlighten us.

Fernando you are brillant!! if its not it should be I actually was going to say it sort of looked like a humming bird feeder.

I'm guessing something to do with the weather like humidity levels or something - are there prizes involved with this? LOL

This is easy!  It's a tiny hot air balloon so that the leprechauns can escape from your house on St. Patrick's Day to go out looking for shamrocks!

Well I am thinking some type of unique lamp.  Can't wait for the unveiling.

It's an automatic fire extinguisher w/ alarm - but I can't figure out what the alarm would sound like being filled with water...(love high resolution photos)

I am with Cari Pilon and think it has something to do with the weather but it does looks like some kind of funky lamp...

Alright - parking - you have me hooked!  This household has guessed what the others have said - soap dispenser and light.  Is that a wick at the bottom?  I say it is an upside down gas lamp but can't figure out the current use unless it is a room freshner......

Hum Kristina. Since you are in St Paul I'm leaning towards something that may have been on one of those big, wonderful paddle boats at some time. I've seen and owned some flower holding wall sconces but this is hung too near the ceiling for that to be a possibility. I also remember seeing some beautiful flower sconces which were at one time installed in luxury cars and it reminds me of those except this one looks pregnant by comparison. So, like many others, I'm parked. Thanks for the fun.

The only thing I can think of is some sort of antique decorative item that you could put coloured water in - you would colour the water to match your decor?  I know it's a stretch.  I wonder if there is some significance to it being so high up on the wall, but then some people hang their pictures too high also.  This was a pretty wordy way of saying "I'm stumped!" :-).  Can't wait to find out the answer.

I agree with Kate, I think it is some kind of a weather detecting device.

I think it's an air freshener, because it looks like the ones you see in gas station restrooms!

Kristina,

I read the follow up to this post first and just had to see the bigger picture.

I burst out laughing when I read Maureen Bray's response...

This is easy!  It's a tiny hot air balloon so that the leprechauns can escape from your house on St. Patrick's Day to go out looking for shamrocks!

Now I want one!
